Frozen & Freeze-Dried Raw Diet FAQ

What makes Green Juju’s food unique?

Three things:

We use primarily organ meat. Instead of traditional muscle meat, we use heart, which is incredibly nutrient-dense. It supports your pet’s heart, liver, and kidney health by delivering the exact nutrients those organs need.

No synthetic vitamins or minerals. We meet nutritional needs using real, nutrient-rich ingredients—just a touch of leafy greens and kelp to round out Vitamin K1 and iodine.

No fish oil.Fish oil can trigger sensitivities in some pets. Thanks to our sourcing—grass-fed, pasture-raised, and wild-caught proteins—our food naturally has a healthy omega 3:6 ratio.

Where is the “meat” in your food?

We’ve swapped traditional muscle meat for heart, which is still meat—but better. It’s more nutrient-dense and supports long-term health.

I’ve heard too much organ meat can upset my dog’s stomach. Is that true?

We understand the concern, but there’s no scientific proof that higher organ meat causes digestive problems. After an AAFCO feeding trial and over two years on the market, we’re happy to report that our food has proven excellent digestibility and functionality results!

Do I need to add fish oil to your food? Can I if I want to?

You don’t need to—our food already has a balanced omega profile. But if your pet does well with fish or algae oil, feel free to add it for extra support!

How much food does my dog need?

That depends on your dog’s size, age, and activity level. Use our feeding calculators as a starting point for frozen and freeze-dried diets as a starting point, and adjust as needed.

Can I lightly cook the frozen food?

We recommend serving it raw. Our recipes are formulated to be complete and balanced in their raw state, and cooking can deplete sensitive nutrients. For best results, serve it as nature intended.

Is Green Juju’s food complete and balanced for puppies?

Yes! Our food is formulated for dogs of all ages, including large-breed puppies. The simplest way to figure out how much to feed growing puppies is to base their portion on their expected adult weight—or double the amount for their current weight and adjust as they grow.

Is it safe for pregnant dogs?

Yes. We recommend feeding up to double the normal amount during pregnancy to support mama and pups.

Is this food appropriate for the growth of large breed puppies?

Yes, we meet or exceed the AAFCO nutrient recommendations for large breed puppies. Feel free to reach out to us for a full list of nutrient breakdowns.

How many cups are in a bag of freeze-dried food?

Approximately 8.3 cups per bag.

I have a large breed dog. Can I feed them freeze-dried?

You can, but for large breeds, our frozen food is a more cost-effective option. Freeze-dried is great for convenience, but may be less budget-friendly for big eaters.

What is the ash content in your freeze-dried and frozen food?

Freeze-Dried:

  • Bison: 8.82%
  • Beef: 8.80%
  • Pork: 8.52%
  • Lamb: 4.02%
  • Goat: 8.71%
  • Rabbit with Duck Liver: 9.22%

  • Beef: 1.34%
  • Pork: 0.96%
  • Lamb: 1.34%
  • Goat: 2.72%

Do you add copper to your food?

Nope. All the copper comes from whole food sources—no synthetics.

Is your food high in copper? Should I be concerned?

Our food contains naturally occurring copper, which is better utilized by the body than synthetic forms. According to holistic vet Dr. Katie Woodley:

“There has never been a scientific correlation between naturally occurring copper and negative outcomes. For most pets, it’s safe, essential, and well-processed by the body.”

Can Green Juju recipes be fed to cats too?

Yes! All of our diets are complete and balanced for both cats and dogs.

What are the feeding guidelines for cats?

FREEZE-DRIED:

  • 5 pounds - 1.12 oz - 8/10 cup - (150 calories)
  • 10 pounds - 1.87 oz  - 1 cup - (250 calories)
  • 15 pounds - 2.63 oz - 1.5 cups - (350 calories)

  • 15 pounds - 9.5 oz - (350 calories)
  • 20 pounds - 12 oz - (450 calories)

Why isn’t the food labeled for cats?

When we launched, retailers preferred separate food lines for cats and dogs. As a small company, we started with dogs—but many of our customers feed it to both, with happy results! Keep an eye out for future packaging updates.

How long does freeze-dried food stay fresh after opening?

Up to 3 months if stored sealed in a cool, dry place.

How long does frozen food stay fresh after opening?

Frozen food is good for 2-3 days once thawed in the fridge. It can stay frozen in the freezer for a year, or the expiration date on the bag.

What about the 5% organ rule? Doesn’t Green Juju use more than that?

That rule is typically based on concerns about vitamin A or D toxicity. But when vitamins A, D, and K2 occur naturally, they help metabolize, balance, and support each other, preventing toxicity. Our short ingredient list reflects how nutrient-dense organs like heart, liver, and kidney truly are.

What kind of Vitamin E preservative do you use? Is it synthetic?

We use mixed tocopherols derived from food—non-GMO and naturally sourced. It’s gentle and well-tolerated, even by sensitive pets.

Why are there ice crystals on the food? Is it freezer-burned?

Not at all. Quick-freezing locks in nutrients and pushes out moisture, creating ice crystals. It’s actually a sign of freshness.

Whole Food Supplements FAQ

Can I refreeze a supplement I’m not using right away?

Yes! Portion into smaller containers or use an ice cube tray for easy refreezing.

The feeding recs for frozen blends seem high—do I have to use that much?

Not at all! We say any amount is better than none. This is real whole food, so your pet’s body will use what it needs and safely get rid of the rest! The best indicator of finding the right amount for your pup will be based on the consistency of their stool.

Should I stick with the same frozen blend or rotate?

Rotation is ideal! Each blend contains different plant ingredients. Rotate all four and you’ll be feeding them 24 different plants in a month—great for microbiome diversity!

If you are dealing with cancer or yeast and need a low-carb diet, Bailey’s Blend, Just Greens, Vitality Blend are below 3% net carb. The Golden Blend is less than 6% net carb.

The last consideration is the protein. Just Greens has bison bone broth, Bailey’s Blend has turkey bone broth, Vitality Blend has venison bone broth, and Golden Blend has duck bone broth.

We also have the Just Greens Freeze Dried which does not have a bone broth at all to support pets with protein sensitivities.

How long do supplements last in the fridge?

  • Just Greens, Vitality Blend, Golden Blend and Bailey’s Blend* : 5-7 days in the fridge
  • Bison, Duck and Venison bone broths : 5-7 days in the fridge
  • Lua’s Golden Paste and Bam’s Beets : 30 days in the fridge
  • Mushroom Probiotic : 30 days in the fridge
  • Raw Goat’s Milk : 14 days in the fridge
  • Frozen : 3 days in the fridge once thawed
  • Freeze-Dried : 3 days in the fridge once rehydrated

Heads Up! Bailey’s Blend and Vitality Blend will ferment itself after 8 days in the fridge. Once fermented, it can last up to 22 days. Must transfer to a glass container as the paper will degrade after 5-7 days.

HELP! My dog ate the oxygen pack! Is it toxic?

Not to worry! It’s non-toxic – we use OxyFree brand. Just monitor your dogs water intake, and if needed, contact your vet or the ASPCA for more information.

Why does the product look different than last time?

Variations in color and texture are totally normal! We use real, whole food in small batches—and that means beautiful, natural variation.

Does your Raw Goat’s Milk contain probiotics?

Yes! It naturally contains 3000+ strains of probiotics. We don’t list them on the label because they vary by season and diet—just like nature intended.

Mushroom broth vs. mushroom probiotic—what’s the difference?

Mushroom broth is cooked at high temperatures and/or pressure to release nutrients into the broth.

Mushroom probiotic is raw and fermented, keeping the full spectrum of nutrients, enzymes, and probiotics intact. We soak mushrooms in water and sea salt, causing naturally existing probiotics and yeast to grow and eat the mushroom's carbohydrate content, releasing the mushroom nutrients as the bacteria metabolize them. This process allows us to keep everything in a raw food state, enhancing all the bacteria and nutrient properties.

Quality Sourcing

Where do you source your proteins?

Beef - Grass-fed from the Pacific Northwest

Bison - Grass-fed from Colorado and Wyoming

Pork - Pasture-raised from the Pacific Northwest

Goat - Wild-harvested from Australia

Lamb - Grass-fed from Australia

Rabbit - Free range in open barns from Spain

Duck - Free-range with outdoor access from California

Why aren’t all your proteins grass-fed?

Because not all animals are meant to eat grass! We source to meet each species’ natural diet, like pasture-raised pigs who thrive with some grains.

Food Safety

Do you use High-Pressure Processing (HPP)?

Yes! HPP safely eliminates pathogens while preserving the raw state of the food.

Which products are HPP’d?

Any product with ground meat: That’s our Whole Food Bites, frozen and freeze-dried Raw Diet Recipes. Trainers and supplements are not HPP’d.

What’s your HPP process?

180 seconds at 87,000 PSI—no heat applied.

Is the food still raw after HPP?

Yes. Enzymes and microflora remain intact, and digestibility is unaffected. HPP helps us ensure safety without compromising quality. To learn more about the process, check out this video.

Why is the food brown? Is it cooked?

Nope! The food is double ground, and exposure to oxygen can cause browning. It’s purely cosmetic with no compromise in quality.
