The Coconut Oil Cure for Seasonal Pet Allergies

Spring is a beautiful season if you have ever been to or lived in a temperate country, but it is also that time of the year when allergies often peak and cause misery for millions of people and their pets.

Unknown to many, it is not just people who suffer from seasonal allergies, your furkids could also be at risk. So what are the signs to look out for, and what could you do, as a pawrent, to effectively treat your pet to alleviate the uncomfortable symptoms of allergies?

Types of Allergic Reactions in Pets

Firstly, it is most important to recognize the type of allergic reaction your pet is suffering from. There are 3 main types: food allergies, environmental allergies, and flea allergy dermatitis (FAD).

Food allergies

A food allergy occurs when your furkid develops sensitivity to a food ingredient. Sometimes, after your pet has consumed a particular ingredient over a long period of time, their immune system may possibly start to have an overreaction. Some symptoms to look out for in a food allergy include vomiting, diarrhea, gas, and even skin problems.

Environmental allergies

An environmental allergy is a reaction to a wide variety of outdoor allergens such as grass, pollen, and ragweed. For house pets, there could be reactions to indoor irritants like dust mites, mold, or chemicals around the home. Generally, if your pet exhibits symptoms during the different seasons, it may be allergic to seasonal outdoor allergens. If the symptoms are seen all year round, the allergy may well be to something inside the home.

Flea allergy dermatitis (FAD)

This particular allergy comes about from sensitivity to flea saliva. Both dogs and cats could develop this condition. The saliva of just one or two fleas could cause terrible itching for your pet, so make sure you comb and bathe your furkid regularly and use, preferably, an all-natural pest repellent around the house.

Seasonal Allergy Symptoms

During spring, it is important to watch out for signs of seasonal allergies in your furkid. Four rather common symptoms to look out for:

1) Skin Irritation
Pets with seasonal allergies often develop itchy skin, which is a miserable cycle of scratching, rubbing and biting in an attempt to relieve the irritation. As skin becomes scratched and damaged, it becomes red, inflamed and tender. In some, and often worse, cases, open sores, hair loss and scabbing would then occur.

2) Hotspots
Hotspots are skin areas that have become infected and inflamed by bacteria. More commonly found in dogs, these are very painful and tender. Hair loss and bleeding also often develop in the infected area.

3) Ear Problems
Dogs are also typically affected by ear problems. Symptoms include inflammation and itching in and around the ear, often accompanied by a foul, fermented-like type odor. Ear problems are usually caused by allergens in the environment, or worse, yeast and bacterial infections.

4) Cold-Like Symptoms
Like their human counterparts, pets could possibly develop cold-like symptoms in response to seasonal allergies, such as sneezing, a runny nose, irritated eyes, and a cough.

Coconut Oil for Allergies

Coconut oil is an all-around superfood with numerous health benefits. The primary "super ingredient" in coconut oil is this fat called "lauric acid". Coconut oil, with its high content of lauric acid, has been scientifically demonstrated to significantly improve overall health in humans.

However, this benefit is applicable beyond humans. Coconut oil in your furkid's diet has a wide range of health benefits, including the power to manage allergies, protect the skin and coat, and keep the gastrointestinal tract healthy.

The lauric acid content in coconut oil contains anti-fungal, anti-bacterial, anti-virus, and anti-yeast properties that clear up allergic reactions, fast. Coconut oil is particularly good at soothing itchy and inflamed skin and promotes the rapid healing of painful conditions like hotspots. It also boosts the immune system to help prevent infection and disease.

Many veterinarians often treat seasonal allergies in pets with steroid therapy, which does work, but is harmful for your furkid in the long run. These powerful drugs actually turn off your pet's immune response to allergens; so while this reduces allergy symptoms, it could have dangerous side effects.

Using coconut oil to treat seasonal allergies is a safe, natural alternative to steroids that is both effective and easy to use at home. Coconut oil has a duo usage, topically – straight onto the skin, or orally – in your furkid's food.

Choosing the Right Coconut Oil

When it comes to coconut oil, not all oils are created equal. The difference is in the oil grade. Cooking-grade coconut oils, like those found in the supermarket, are used primarily for cooking. A cooking-grade oil is typically high in moisture and low in lauric acid; that "super ingredient" responsible for coconut oil's excellent health benefits.

CocoTherapy virgin coconut oil is different.

CocoTherapy virgin coconut oil is a therapeutic-grade oil. It is sourced from a USDA-certified organic family farm in the Philippines, and made in CocoTherapy's facility. High in lauric acid and low in moisture, CocoTherapy virgin coconut oil is very effective for managing allergies in your furkid. So if you want a coconut oil that will help with your pet’s health issues, be sure to choose a therapeutic-grade coconut oil like CocoTherapy virgin coconut oil.
