Virgin coconut oil is a gentle, natural choice for minor cuts and scrapes on dogs and cats. It's naturally antibacterial, antiviral and antifungal, it keeps the wound moist so it heals well, and unlike most antibiotic creams, it's safe if your pet licks it off.
Why coconut oil works for minor wounds
Helps prevent infection
Lauric acid and the other medium-chain fatty acids fight bacteria, viruses and fungi.

It keeps the wound moist and protected, which helps the skin repair.

Pets will lick a wound whatever you put on it, so this matters.
How to use coconut oil on a minor wound
Clean it first: spray or wipe the area with JOOF Hygiene Water to remove dirt and germs, and let it dry.
Apply a thin layer: gently massage a small amount of coconut oil onto the cut or scrape.
Repeat 2–3 times a day until it has healed, cleaning with Hygiene Water before each application.
Feed it too: adding coconut oil to meals supports the immune system from within while the wound heals. Start slowly if your pet isn't used to it.
Insect bites
Clean the bite with JOOF Hygiene Water, then apply a thin layer of coconut oil to soothe the itch. Reapply 2–3 times a day until it settles.
See a vet straight away if your pet has swelling around the face or throat, hives, vomiting or difficulty breathing, as these can be signs of an allergic reaction.
Keep it in your first-aid kit
A jar of coconut oil and a bottle of Hygiene Water cover most minor scrapes, paw-pad nicks, insect bites and grazes from rough play. They're especially handy for walks on hot pavements or rough paths.
FROM MY EXPERIENCE
Coconut oil has always been my go-to first aid whenever Wangcai or BeanBean had a cut. BeanBean is also more prone to insect bites, and coconut oil has been her best friend for those, whatever bit her. After every walk, I clean her with JOOF Hygiene Water. If I spot a bite or anything that looks irritated, that's when the coconut oil comes in.
It's even helped with her throat. BeanBean sometimes licks the floor and picks up hair that irritates her throat and makes her cough. When that happens, I give her ¼ teaspoon of coconut oil, and it soothes her throat.
If you try this, let your pet lick the coconut oil from a spoon or give it slowly, rather than pouring it into their throat. A cough that lasts more than a day or two should be checked, in case it's not just hair.
When it's not a home job
Coconut oil is for minor cuts and scrapes. See a vet promptly for:
✓ deep cuts, or wounds that keep bleeding
✓ puncture wounds or animal bites, which can trap bacteria deep inside
✓ wounds with swelling, heat, pus or a bad smell
✓ any wound near the eyes, or a pet who seems unwell

Is coconut oil better than antibiotic cream for pets?
For minor scrapes, coconut oil is a gentle choice that's safe if licked, which most creams aren't. For deep or infected wounds, see your vet.
Can I use coconut oil on hot spots?
Yes. Clean with Hygiene Water first, then apply a thin layer. If the hot spot spreads or keeps coming back, look into the underlying cause, such as allergies.
Which coconut oil should I use?
